When I tried one, I just couldn’t get over the low non-adjustable steering column. Felt like the wheel was touching my legs the whole time, creepy and terrible. I ended up with a minty perfect 1988 RX7 FC non-turbo, and it was just as slow but felt way better to drive.

Not too surprised he hated the car he drove and thought power would die in between gear. There’s a reason why those ccars did not come with freaking 18 or 19 inches wheels!!!
NA come with 15 inches wheels and 215/60r15. Get back to stock and hop! Miraculous, it will accelerate again!

He is right. I would HATE the car he drove as wheel size definitely ruin it (acceleration and such). But if he knew better, he’d drive a stock one instead of this donked POS...

I love mine, but, it all depends on how you build it. But he’s right, they’re not fast by any means. My supercharged Nissan Xterra accelerates faster.
And yeah, I hate those wheels. I’ll never swap out my 15s. Even if it means BF Goodrich Radial T/As are all I can put on them.

The wheel diameter wouldn’t change the gear spacing. Wide spread ratios are still wide spread ratios.

if the overall tire diameter is larger (and it looks like it is, seeing how they fill the wheel wells) you’ve effectively lowered the final drive ratio.

Hum? Wheels that big will kill his acceleration and that’s what happened there. Regular sized wheels would solve this easily. A lot more force is required to get it moving with wheels of this size. Power that was sufficient when stock now require 5 or 600 extra rpm to provide the same acceleration. That and the last 944s I drove was stock and had no problem to accelerate :)

The overall diameter isn’t likely much bigger than stock. The final drive may be changed 1-3% but would still have no effect on the spacing between the gears.
For example, on my Supra, shift at ~6000 next gear is about ~4000; right in the meat of the powerband. Going to a slightly taller tire didn’t change the gear spacing.
What Mr. Regular seems to be complaining about is that when you shift that it falls out of the powerband.

Nah, the wheels are massively bigger... If you look at the title picture in detail, he even had to roll the arches near the bumper to make it fit and manage to get the front wheels to turn. Think something closer to 10% change in the final drive.
Power band would be just fine if the car could move with the power allowed. This is not the case for a reason: wheels.

Depends on the transaxle the car was fitted with. There were several different types. This one was probably fitted with the standard base model transaxle, which had a wide spacing through the gears. If you had a 944 with an LSD, the ratios were closer, with a tall 5th for highway driving.
But the stock shift still felt like garbage. The best upgrade to a 944 is to replace the OEM shift linkage. Since the shift linkage ran from the front of the vehicle to the back, there were multiple points at which it could go bad. Adding a short shift linkage to the transaxle and replacing all the stock bushings made worlds of difference.
But still, it’s a slow car. My 5000lb SUV accelerates faster then my 944. But, as cliche as this sounds, you don’t buy a 944 for speed, you buy it for fun.

But to back up your point, the DONK’d rims don’t matter much. My 944 runs 225/55R15s and they appear to be the same overall size. You really can’t physically fit much bigger than the OEM wheel size.

10% is a ridiculous difference in overall tire size.
225/35-19 is .2 in taller than stock. Raises final gear by about .2%
You can put huge wheels on it without drastically changing the ratios.
Flavien Vidal

Again, he put wheels big enough that rolling the fenders around the front bumper was required. That’s quite a bit more than 2%...

If the Geo Storm GSi we looked at wasn’t a total turd, that would’ve a no-brainer. I don’t think the Camaro or bike are quite RCR material, but who knows about the rest.

Ive come to accept it. I had a brief conversation with him about it. He’s busy, he gets overwhelmed. the sheer amount of followers he has is way bigger than just us, he gets hundreds of emails a day, I cant possibly imagine him always being able to reply or review.
Hes been in my area before too. But thats life. I would love for him to pick my SL to shreds, but on his time and his terms. When my life gets busy, its no different. Mr Regular is a great guy, but human, just like the rest of us.

I suspect the original “187HP” rating the 944S had was a bit optimistic... especially with US emissions equipment added.
It could also be that the example he was driving was a little ‘tired’.

You can see in this video how much it rubs like crazy... And that’s the REAR wheels that rub like that under acceleration. His wheels are easily 10% too big.
